Chelan County Mountain Rescue is an all-volunteer organization whose purpose is to rescue ill or injured back country users from our beautiful Central Cascade Mountains. It is legally the mandate of the county Sheriff to come to the rescue of those in need in the back country. However, just as in many other areas of our nation, our own Chelan County Sheriff's Department cannot be expected to provide emergency medical care in the back country, nor can we expect an agency whose main duty is law enforcement to be familiar with our complex mountain terrain nor can we expect them to effect technical rock or ice rescue.
We are climbers, hikers, and medical professionals with a passion for our mountains. We normally work in conjunction with and under the direction of the Chelan County Sheriff's office. We currently have an excellent relationship with Sheriff Burnett and his deputies.
We are a little bit different than most search and rescue organizations in that we are willing to provide pre-hospital emergency care to the best of our abilities. We have in the past been less involved with "search" than with "rescue."
We currently have 34 members, a board of dirctors, and we try to meet monthly. We try to add some training to each meeting. We also schedule training days during which we practice skills such as technical rock rescue. We also train with the Sheriff's high angle ropes rescue team when possible.
Since we are all volunteers, with no paid staff, it sometimes becomes difficult to find all the necessary rescuers for an emergency. We would very much like to expand our membership! We can always use the help of volunteers who are good rock climbers. We can always use the help of volunteers who are medical professionals and who have mountain skills.
